04.07.-24.08.2008 – „Sights from a Steeple“ Ulla Von Brandenburg IBID PROJECTS ‘The work of the participating artists deals with issues such as the dark side of failed romance, a Poe-esque approach to the subject of the night or attitudes of austerity and self-restraint. In some ways it can be described This does not mean that the artists are engaged in nihilistic attitudes. On the contrary, many of them find similar possibilities to the way that groups such as the Cure or Joy Division explored links between disaster and romance, and saw them as closely related. Through multiple references from Post-Punk music to Nineteenth century literature and scientific photography, the show will include artists who share a similar fascination for pre-Modernist canons – or more recent subcultures (often musical) that in some way remain unknown or have already been claimed by others. Because of rather than in spite of this aesthetic sensibility that could be described as shadowy or austere, displaying an almost Protestant attitude to materials, these practices suggests a richness of content that is borne from studious research, that invites a certain level engagement from the viewer and an expectation of investigation.’ |
